If I were Peter, I would have told Jesus to 'stay in his lane.' After all, Peter was the professional fisherman, and Jesus was a carpenter and a preacher. What did he know about fishing? Peter could have said, ‘stick to the hammer and nails and leave the fishing to me’. Luckily for the whole world, I am not Peter. I do credit this to Peter as a great act of faith, but I think we must also entertain this idea: Jesus was the most charismatic man who ever walked the face of the earth. Not in a false, schmoozing sort of way, but genuine magnetism. A charism is a gift or grace given to someone for the building up of others – certainly Jesus had this in greater measure than anyone else. He still does.
When we receive Jesus in the Eucharist, He then walks with us into our workplaces. Not as disconnected and unaffected bystander, but as someone who can show us how to do it. He can make us better people in our seemingly separate occupations. He wants to be invited to ‘Bring your Lord to work day’ – every day. Like Peter, be willing to let Him show you a new solution, a better way. Let Him help you build better relationships with coworkers and customers. Let Him imbue you with integrity and dignity in your work. But there is one word of caution – He intends to make you a fisher of men – so don’t be surprised if others come to you with a question or curiosity about your faith – because when you bring Jesus with you in the workplace, you become the most charismatic version of yourself.
