February 17 - Sign, Sign, everywhere a sign

In today's Gospel, Jesus is asked to provide a sign from heaven for the Pharisees to believe in Him. This occurs immediately following Jesus feeding of 4,000 people from a couple of loaves and fish.

In the video series The SEARCH, host Chris Stefanick imagines that God looks down upon those who are asking for a sign, and says 'Did you not notice...everything?' If we would be so bold as to open our eyes, our minds and our hearts, we would find that God shows us every day - if we look with the eyes of faith.

One of the interesting things about the multiplication of the loaves and fishes is that those who were fed might only have known that someone share food with them. The crowd was so large that only a handful of people who were distributing the food would have known how much food came from so little. Those who looked with eyes of faith, and sought to find out would discover exactly what Jesus had done.

The Pharisees were not interested in believing, they were coming from a stance of unbelief, a position of challenge, perhaps even feeling threatened. How are we coming to Jesus? Are our hearts open to learning who He really is and how much He really loves us? Do we want to see this, or do we want to hold onto doubt so that we can also hold on to some of the comfortable things from our material existence - without guilt. His power and His love challenge us. Are we ready to see Him?

Maybe that's something that we can ask in prayer - Lord, help me to see all the ways, all the signs - don't let me miss a single way through which you would reveal yourself and your goodness to me. There are signs everywhere.
