Jesus helps Peter and the others put things into perspective. They are focused on all that they have given up. Jesus turns this around and helps them see what is gained.

It is always challenging to trade current things for future things. We are naturally suspicious of the future. We have had our share of disappointments, we have been let down, we have been misled, we have been lied to. These memories reside deep within us and subconsciously raise questions of trust any time a promise of the future is floated for our consideration.

Our Lord knows this about us and includes some current-day promises as well: A hundred times as many houses and brothers and mothers and sisters and lands in this present age, along with some persecutions. How can this be?

If we look at Matthew 12:50, we will see that Jesus refers to everyone who does the will of the Father as His mothers, brothers and sisters. In the Acts of the Apostles, will come to live together as family, and perhaps even a more loving and devoted family than they had before. This is intended to be our Parish family, and when we see the loving mothers, brothers and sisters, we should not only be excited about their accompaniment, but about what it says about the assuredness of His promise of eternal life. A gift for now, and a gift for later. What a blessing.
