Sheepish

Let’s face it. In this day and age, particularly in our American culture, nobody wants to be a sheep. As a matter of fact, being called a sheep is very likely to be a derogatory comment. Even being likened to a sheep - being called sheepish – suggests you are meek, timid, stupid. None of these seem to translate to success or happiness in our modern world. Yet, unless we understand what it means to be sheep, we can’t fully appreciate having a Good Shepherd.
The thing about sheep is that they choose to rely on the shepherd—FOR EVERYTHING: Wake up in the morning hungry—where’s the shepherd? Need some water—where’s the shepherd? Lost, in danger, confused—where is the shepherd? They do this voluntarily. There are sheep that live without a shepherd, although probably not long, given that they are defenseless against predators. But they could choose that. But the sheep have decided that following the shepherd is the best thing for them, and so they follow.
As humans, we like our self–sufficiency. We are talented, hard-working, ingenious and we tend to think that this is why we are where we are. It is very easy to forget that every single talent, gift, person, or opportunity ultimately flows from God. Maybe we could stand to be a little more ‘sheepish.’
