It sure seems like Jesus is being very cagey in today's Gospel. If you don't look beyond the surface, it appears that He is really just playing games with His questioners. Is He dodging their questions? No and yes.
In order to decipher what's going on, we need to remember only one thing - Jesus is truth. Listen to what He says as Pilate tries to find out just who Jesus is: "For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”
As the chief priests ask Jesus questions about who He is, He senses that they really aren't seeking real answers, they aren't about the truth. So He asks a question to expose this. In asking about the authority of John's baptism, Jesus uncovers that they are not about expressing or uncovering the truth - but are calculating what will happen if they answer one way vs. the other. It appears as though if there were an answer with the desired outcome, they would choose it regardless of its relationship to the truth.
Because Jesus establishes that they are not interested in the truth, He knows they are not genuinely interested in who He is or what He has to say. Why are they not interested? Is Jesus not the most amazing man that they have ever seen? Yes, He is, but hearing what He has to say will likely challenge them to change their life. They have a vision of what their life can be like, should be like - and they are fond of it, in love with it, perhaps.
We have to look ourselves in the mirror and ask if we are ready to know in our hearts who Jesus is and are we willing to abandon OUR vision for our life for HIS vision for our life? The differences between the two could be significant, or perhaps it is just a thing or two that we are clinging to that we do not want to hand over to Him.
Spend a few moments today thinking about whether we are willing to commit to the truth, or if our response to Him will be based on how we think it will affect the things we have come to love about our life (or our dreams).
