Ask, seek, knock.

Okay, I am just going to admit it. I have definitely been that guy. The guy who has no idea where he is going but refuses to ask directions. Now I know that I am not the only one, but people who refuse to ask for directions (because it is embarrassing) also will often not admit it (because it is embarrassing).
A lot of things can stand in our way of asking. Many times, we don't ask because we don't feel we deserve what we might want to ask for. Other times, we don't ask because we feel we should have been able to do it on our own (refer to the directions example above). Sometimes, in an interesting twist of fate, we won't ask because we realize we should have asked before and now the situation is worse now that we have delayed the asking.
When it comes to asking God, there are other elements that come into play. One is that we think God might not be able to do it. We imagine that somehow, God is actually bound by the limits of the world - you know things like gravity and the boiling point of water. I think that one might not happen as often as this one: We are afraid that the CAN help us but refuses to do so. There are as many reasons as there are people who might believe this. In fact, unlike the 'God can't do it' reason, this one actually happens. Sometimes God will choose not to help us. He might have a bigger, better - DIFFERENT plan for us.
This is why asking is so important. If we trust that God can do all things, and we also trust that He loves us and therefore wills the very best for us, then when we ask for something in a heartfelt way and God does not grant it, we can then assume two things: God does not intent it for us, because He has something better/different in mind OR now is not the time. Having this clarity can be life changing, because it gives us motivation for the day: OK God, if you didn't change things yet, then you are allowing today to happen as is for some purpose.
Our job in the face of that realization is to ask ourselves HOW God might want us to go through it. How can we give Him Glory and Honor in it. How can we grow in virtue and devotion to Him in it? How can we love others in the midst of it. These are questions with much more concrete answers (I didn't say easy, I just said concrete).
So Ask, Seek, Knock and be confident that God has plans for you that are very good indeed.
