It's my life, right?

Absolutely. Jesus affirms that we are free to make decisions about it. He does want to be clear about what decision we are making. It might not be as simple as it looks based on His somewhat cryptic statement: "whoever wishes to save his life will lose it."

It all goes back to how we define 'life', and therefore how we define our lives and ourselves. Jesus comes so that we may have life and have joy to the full. This does not mean 60, or 80 or even 100 years of it. He means to give us everlasting life. We are eternal beings and if we think of how it must feel to bee 100, that might not sound like a pleasant thing. But Jesus offers us an eternal life that is lived in a world unmarred by sin, in a body not ravaged by age and disease - hmmm... that's starting to sound like something pretty good, maybe even something worth dying for?

It is very easy for us to get so wrapped up in the day to day happenings of this world, scrolling from post to post on our phones, from activity to activity, from workday to weekend and back that we never even stop to think about the eternal reality that could be right around the corner. So certainly decide about your life, but decide about the WHOLE thing not just the thing we are in the midst of.

Once we see that eternity is what we have in store, we might not cling so desperately to this life that we ignore the teachings, and the good news offered to us by the Savior. What is the Good News? Eternal life. A life where we can love one another perfectly. So trade in the good but not great life that you have, by turning it over to the Lord, and get the literal perfect life that you have been longing for since...well, all your life.
