Pillar of Virtue

In the series The SEARCH, host Chris Stefanick asks the question: What if we reject religion because of what we think it is?

As we discussed this, we came to the conclusion that one of the biggest sources of misperception about religion is the people. As one person put it: Christians are often not very good examples of Christianity. Jesus wants us to be different, to be better than the scribes and Pharisees that He calls out in today's Gospel. They are dualistic. They espouse and speak of one thing and do another.

Part of this is the difficulty of the human condition. We sin. No two ways about it. We all know this in the depths of our heart. This is why, when someone seems to present themselves as 'picture perfect', we don't buy it. We know there must some 'chink in the armor'. So we instinctively reject and mistrust any who would present themselves as a pillar of virtue - not wavering.

This is why it is so important that we live openly and honestly acknowledging our imperfection and our need for a Savior. This does not mean that we walk about proclaiming our sins to others, but rather that we openly admit when we make a mistake and stay open to the idea that we just might not know everything.

Our Church will not be built on pillars of virtue but on rocks like St. Peter, failing and falling and acknowledging all along that we are in need of a Savior - who is indeed a Pillar of Virtue.

NOTE: Starting September 11th at Cadence Clubhouse, I will be hosting The SEARCH - a seven session series that covers the biggest questions of our lives: Why are we here? Who are we? Is there a God? Can we know Him? Who is Jesus, really? Do we even need a church? Appetizers, great beer selections, stunning videos, great conversation - and ZERO JUDGEMENT. Come and bring a friend. I guarantee you will leave as better friends. https://smmpgh.org/thesearch
