Remain

Sometimes, because of translation, phrases sound odd to our western, English-tuned ears. Remain in my word might be one of those phrases. How do we remain in a word? Shouldn't the word remain in us? I have always thought of this as a process. If we want to remain in His Word, we should first get into it.
If you are a regular reader here, then take a moment to praise God, because you are already engaged in this process in two important ways: you are in The Word frequently and you are not merely swirling around in whatever thoughts might come to you, but seeking to get some input on how to make sense of it.
The other really important part is to bring the Word with you into everything. Allow it to permeate your every activity and every day. This takes a lot of intentionality and effort, but oh so worth it. When you spend a year reading scripture every single day, you will start to think in scripture passages. It is like songs.
Very often the simplest of phrases will make me automatically think of a song. Example: yesterday I was re-arranging my prayer table at home and moved the statue of Mary that is there, and my wife said, 'she is so heavy', and predictably I responded "She aint heavy, she's my mother." - of course singing to the appropriate tune. Many of us do this (hopefully not in as corny a way as I do) because it is the way our brain works.
When the words of scripture begin to echo in our thoughts this way, we can begin to bring them into every aspect of our lives. Whether we speak them out loud, or if they just cause us to pause in our thoughts, we are remaining in the words. When we then allow them to influence our actions and reactions, then we are authentically following His life. He was always consistent in word and deed and therefore always authentic. The more we bath ourselves in His words, the more likely we are to think, act and react like Him. Warning: it is a long process to get there. Encouragement: you have already started! Keep going! Remain in His Word!
