Sense of Urgency

I have often remarked to people about the sense of urgency amongst the early Christian leaders. St. Paul was running around the Mediterranean establishing community after community and other Apostles were doing likewise. Part of what was fueling their urgency and energy was that Jesus had left them with the sense that He was coming right back. We see some of this same urgency from Jesus in today's Gospel.

It really is hard for us humans to jump into the viewpoint of the Savior, the Son of God - go figure. In the Gospel, it seems as though there are very important life events that Jesus is asking others to put aside to follow Him. Surely He can't mean that someone couldn't bury their father, or say goodbye to their family? Well it surely requires us to take a different perspective - an eternal one.

Through the lens of eternity, getting there is everything. If our loved ones can't be drawn there, then they are really dead, not just dead in this world. If they can't come to know Him then we will someday REALLY say good-bye to them. His urgency is fueled by His desire to save us all. Fortunately for us, we don't often have to make these either/or type decisions, but we do still need to prioritize and have some urgency.

We often have the opportunity to invite someone, bring them along, listen to their concerns, help them with a struggle, show them Christ by following Christ. Don't put it off - act with a sense of urgency.
