One of the most powerful ancient Jewish traditions is that of the Passover. In the midst of Passover the fathers were commanded to share the story of the liberation from Egypt with their sons.
Imagine if in every Christian family that the father told his sons of how Christ saved them. That's the incredible part of the tradition is that the fathers, when telling their sons of what God had done, had to tell it, not as a historical event happening many generations prior, but had to relay that God had saved THEM from Egypt.
In the Gospel today, Jesus tells the father that the son has been healed. The father then discovers that indeed the story is true. I can't help but wonder how the story was told in that family. Did the father have to tell the son, or did the son realize what had happened and he had to tell the story to the father about what had happened?
We don't have a clear historical answer, but I can tell you this: Many, many, many fathers have not felt it their responsibility to share the story of Christ saving humanity, and many, many more that did not feel the responsibility, or perhaps even the reality, to pass on the story of how God saved them.
Let's endeavor to put an end to this spiritually crippling trend. Share the story of God's amazing work, not only for the world, but for you. If you struggle to tell your story, reach out to me. I would love to help you unwrap your story and prepare you to tell it.
